The Need for Proper Foot Care

At Sole Clean® our goal is to help you live a happier, healthier lifestyle by making the best foot care products that are easy to apply, offer the best value, and protects our environment.

Here’s what we’re all faced with:

Our feet can have over 250,000 sweat glands producing about a pint of sweat per day. The problem is when sweat interacts with bacteria on the skin it can stink. When you combine the effects of stress, medication, poor hygiene, ill-fitting shoes, changing hormone levels, and a host of other variables problems begin to arise. Add to this diabetes and hyperthyroidism and proper foot care becomes vital.

Given our active lifestyles, it’s no surprise that about one out of four people is affected by a fungus called Tinea Pedis. It is so common in fact that people simply refer to it as Athlete’s Foot. And by the way, you don’t have to be an athlete to have it and spread the fungus. The athlete’s foot fungus is everywhere in our environment, it is highly contagious, and anyone can get it. Touching contaminated surfaces, using socks, shoes, or towels that have the fungus keeps it among us.

Symptoms:

The effects of Athlete’s foot can appear differently in people. Some people experience peeling, cracking skin while others may have redness, a burning sensation, dryness, soggy looking skin, or a combination of these. These conditions usually appear on the soles, sides of your feet, or between your toes. It can be uncomfortable and embarrassing. Unfortunately, the athlete’s foot fungus can be reoccurring and a pain to get rid of. Using regular soap and water repeatedly throughout the day may not be enough.

While some people have mild infections lasting only a few days, other people’s infections can last for weeks, months, or years. If your infection is severe or has spread to other parts of your body, please see your healthcare professional. It is also important to note that other skin conditions or reactions from materials or chemicals used in the production of your shoes or socks may also appear as athlete’s foot.

Here’s how we can help you & your feet:

Proper Foot Care Tips

The average person will take enough steps to walk around the planet more than four times. Along the way, you have a high chance of stepping into something you didn’t plan on. Cleaning up properly can make all the difference and get you back on your way.

Athlete’s foot is a highly contagious fungal infection affecting 25% of the population that can easily spread to other parts of the body. Eliminating the fungus early will keep it from spreading on you and lessen the chances of infecting those people you cross paths with.

At home,

  • Wash your socks inside out.

  • Use clean towels after cleaning and drying your feet thoroughly, especially between the toes.

  • Don’t share shoes or wear ill-fitting shoes, or shoes made of man-made, constrictive material do not allow air to circulate around the foot.

  • Allowing your shoes to dry out between wearing them will also help.

  • Wearing socks and shoes made of natural materials is best.

  • Keeping surfaces that your bare feet come into contact with disinfected will help.

If you or someone in your household comes into contact with the fungus through their activities at the gym, school, locker room, dance class, or friend’s house for example try eliminating the fungus as quickly as possible by using an antibacterial and antifungal.

You can be the cleanest person on the planet and still contract the fungal infection.

Professions and places of activities where people are often barefooted such as military personnel, athletes, swimming pools, and gyms where athlete’s foot is prevalent should follow a daily foot cleansing routine to protect themselves and those around them.

Keeping your fingers and nails clean will also help reduce your exposure.

If you have athlete’s foot, do not use your finger or toe nails to scratch an infected area. The temporary relief of scratching that itch can lead to the fungus spreading to other parts of your body as well as leading to an infection in your nails.

Athlete’s foot can last from a few days to a few weeks, months or years. It can be a reoccurring fungus for some, and be eliminated for others quickly. Because the fungus spreads easily, keep your feet protected.

While traveling,

  • Remember hotels try their best to disinfect their rooms and showers but it is possible to miss a spot.
  • Shower stalls are breeding grounds for fungus at home and on the road.
  • Fungus and bacteria are not limited to shower stalls or bathroom floors.
  • Try using simple flip flops rather than bare feet to walk around the room and shower.
  • Protect yourself in pool areas and spas.

Special Risks & Considerations:

  • If you have diabetes, a compromised immune system, or hyperthyroidism it is especially important to maintain clean, healthy feet.

  • Other factors to consider that may cause excessive sweating, pain, or discomfort to your feet include, but are not limited to stress, medication, and poor hygiene. As always, seek advice from your physician if you have any health concerns.

  • Caring for your feet properly will help keep you and your feet healthy.

Life is a journey. Remember to relax, breathe, and enjoy every step you take.
